Mission Statement
The mission of the UNHS NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center is to revitalize and grow neighborhoods. We do this through home ownership, housing rehabilitation and community empowerment.
Founded in 1979, The HomeOwnership Center is a leading community-based nonprofit organization working in partnership with local, state and national government, financial institutions, and public and private funders to increase successful home ownership in Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Fulton, Montgomery and Ostego Counties. Equally important are the partnerships The HomeOwnership Center builds with local residents to create safer, affordable neighborhoods through resident empowerment and community development.
In the past 15 years, we have:
- Helped more than 1,000 families realize the American Dream by purchasing their first home
- Established and coordinated over 200 block associations
- Provided pre-purchase education and counseling to more than 1,500 individuals
- Invested more than $8 million into our neighborhoods through our owner-occupied housing rehabilitation programs
- Educated more than 1,200 families to become more financially literate
In the past 3 years, since the foreclosure crisis has spiked, we have:
- Saved more than 130 homes from foreclosure
- Counseled nearly 2,500 families on how to save their homes and prevent foreclosure
- Saved more than $2.5 million in tax revenue and other funds for local municipalities by helping those families avoid foreclosure
Overall, The Homeownership Center has stimulated $100 million in economic activity through direct investment and leveraged dollars.
